BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY
Madison County is as American as apple pie, in fact, Madison County is the “birthplace” of the Red Delicious
apple.  We’ll travel the back roads through the the heart of Madison County to see the largest group of
covered bridges that exist in one area in the western half of the Mississippi Valley.  With our local guide, you
will hear the stories of the events surrounding the building of and the history and preservation of the bridges.
Our guide will also entertain you with some of the interesting facts about when the movie was being made.

JOHN WAYNE’S HOME
The mere mention of his name produces images of courage and patriotism.  The life story of Marion Robert
Morrison (John Wayne) began on May 26, 1907 in Winterset, Iowa.  We’ll step back in time to visit the modest
4-room home beautifully restored to reflect its appearance in 1907.

HISTORICAL WINTERSET, IOWA
The historical downtown area of Winterset has preserved several old building, including the interesting Court
House, for touring.  We’ve built in plenty of free time and shopping in Winterset.  How about coffee and apple
fritters at the local downtown restaurant?

LUNCH AT THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
The Church Ladies are expecting you for lunch.  They are going to lay out a meal “fit for a King (and Queen).
You know, there’s no better food than a covered dish Church lunch.

WILLKOMMEN TO THE AMANA COLONIES
The Colonies have been a treasure on the Iowa prairie for over 150 years, welcoming visitors to a very unique
German  experience ( similar to the Amish).  The seven villages offers you the opportunity to step back from
today’s busy pace, to relish in the comfort of locally crafted foods, furniture, art and more.  The Colonies offer
a unique history and culture found nowhere else in the world.

MARK TWAIN’S HOME
The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum includes eight buildings (six of them on the National Register of
Historic Places) including two exciting, interactive museums whose collections include fifteen original Norman
Rockwell paintings.

JOHN DEERE PAVILLION
In 1843, John Deere changed the course of local history by locating his first plow manufacturing plant on the
banks of the Mississippi River here in Moline, IL.  The rest, as they say, is history and that history is preserved
at the John Deere Pavillion; at special treat for both men and women.
