We’ll travel the back roads through the the heart of Madison County to see the largest group of covered bridges that exist in one area in the western half of the Mississippi Valley. With our local guide, you will hear the stories of the events surrounding the building of and the history and preservation of the bridges. Our guide will also entertain you with some of the interesting facts about when the movie was being made. JOHN WAYNE’S HOME The mere mention of his name produces images of courage and patriotism. The life story of Marion Robert Morrison (John Wayne) began on May 26, 1907 in Winterset, Iowa. We’ll step back in time to visit the modest 4-room home beautifully restored to reflect its appearance in 1907. HISTORICAL WINTERSET, IOWA The historical downtown area of Winterset has preserved several old building, including the interesting Court House, for touring. We’ve built in plenty of free time and shopping in Winterset. How about coffee and apple fritters at the local downtown restaurant? LUNCH AT THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The Church Ladies are expecting you for lunch. They are going to lay out a meal “fit for a King (and Queen). You know, there’s no better food than a covered dish Church lunch. JOHN DEERE PAVILLION In 1843, John Deere changed the course of local history by locating his first plow manufacturing plant on the banks of the Mississippi River here in Moline, IL.
