Pre-Civil War Mansions. We’ll visit three or more beautifully restored mansions & historic churches built in the 1840’s and 1850’s. These are not just museum of yesteryear, but, most homes are still private residences, and, are not generally opened to the public. The tentative list of mansions we will visit are shown below. ATHENIA – circa 1858-1859: Built by Judge Jeremiah W. Clapp, member of the Confederate Congress. Judge Clapp was a man of small stature and feared capture during the Holly Springs’ 1862 raids, so it is believed that during the raids, he hid in one of the mansion’s grand columns. The current owners have identified a crawl space of sufficient size to contain a small person. The home features priceless Zuber wallpaper and its original bronze gasoliers which have been converted for electricity. BURTON PLACE – circa 1848: This home was constructed by Mary Mavina Shields Burton, the first woman in Mississippi to receive a divorce. Designed to conserve heat, the home boasts walls two feet thick, with two sets of windows and two sets of doors in each frame. It property still retains its original outdoor kitchen and slave quarters. MONTROSE & MONTROSE ARBORETUM – circa 1858: Alfred Brooks built this home as a wedding present for his daughter. The home has been featured on TV & in movies and is used as a magnificent setting for antebellum weddings and parties. The grounds are covered with fifty different native tree specimens and are labeled with both common & botanical names. As time permits, we will have the opportunity to visit additional sites (homes and/or Churches) in Holly Springs. Also, arts and crafts booths will be plentiful throughout the city. A VERY SPECIAL AFTERNOON OF MUSIC, ALONG WITH A UNIQUE LUNCH IS ALSO PLANNED. We’ve arranged for a very special lunch in the Victorian Parlor and Fellowship Hall of the Presbyterian Church, built in 1860. You can still see a lead bullet from the Civil War still embedded in the floor. AFTER LUNCH, WE’LL PROCEED TO ANOTHER LOCAL PRE-CIVIL WAR CHURCH FOR A BEAUTIFUL MUSICAL CONCERT. After the concert, we’ll continue with our tour of homes. So, what about dinner? We’ve got you covered there, also. We’ll leave Holly Springs around 5 p.m., or so, and stop in Jackson for dinner, which is also included in your tour price.
